March is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Month

by Teresa Steinfatt on March 14, 2010

Macular degeneration is a progressive eye condition affecting as many as 15 million Americans. It causes severe vision loss because it attacks the macula of the eye, where our sharpest central vision occurs. It gets in the way of reading, driving, identifying faces, watching television, safely navigating stairs and performing other daily tasks.

Although it rarely results in complete blindness, it only leaves peripheral vision, and dim images or black holes at the center of vision. The fastest growing form is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is the top cause of severe vision loss and legal blindness in adults over 60 in the U.S.  For more information, visit www.amd.org.
